Slam Tour Diary: June 14, 1990 Los Angeles

We are in Los Angeles and the gig is at The Roxy, a historic rock club on Sunset Strip, a big step up from our only other LA gig at Club Lingerie. The list of bands that have played at the Lou Adler-owned venue is amazing, starting with their 1974 opening weekend featuring Neil and Crazy Horse. It was probably booked on the premise that we would be popular by the time we made it to California but now the 500-capacity venue feels a little too big for us. Not to worry, however, as LA is the birthplace of the industry guest list, and the place feels at least half-full by the set time.An old friend and LA transplant, Kirk Swan, from Dumptruck, opens the show and it’s nice to see a familiar face so far from Allston.

The band and our managers, Bob and Brenda, in town from NY, met with the label at dinner to discuss the dismal performance of the record. The first ‘single’, a promo 12 inch of ‘Love Barge’ had failed to make much of an impact on mainstream radio (and since there was little college radio in the summer), they were dropping promotion on that song. They agreed to try a second single of ‘Impossible Things’, however, so all was not lost. That would give us another chance at radio and we took the stage that night with at least some renewed enthusiasm.

Published by Steve, Denise, and Coco: Calculating Route

Welcome to our blog that we’re calling Calculating Route…, a reference to our GPS guide and the general randomness of our travels. Of course, we do have a route, at least through the end of 2023, but we’re trying to keep our options open in the search for a permanent, or semi-permanent, home here in Greater Europe. Off we go!
