Slam Tour Diary: June 16, 1990 Long Beach

Tonight is the last of our LA area shows before we head north for a handful dates in the Bay Area. It’s a Saturday night at Bogart’s in Long Beach, a place we played the last time we were in Cali, on the bottom of a bill with House of Freaks and Meat Puppets. Tonight, we’re headling and making a lot more than the $100 we pulled in for that gig.

We have the van fixed but are still struggling with the RV stalling, the fallout from my West Texas Mistake. My notebook is filled with contact info for local branches of Camping World and National RV but no one can seem to solve the problem. Sometimes we go 50 miles before it stalls out, sometimes 100 miles, and then we have to sit on the side of the road and wait until it will start again. Every time this happens, I feel very guilty.

But tonight, everyone is in a good mood and there are lots of friends in the audience. The set is a strange one; we play Rockin’ in the Free World in the set instead of as an encore for some reason and mix up the order of songs a bit. In addition to wearing my green suit every night, I make a point of introducing ‘Impossible Things’ the same way each night, which you can hear below: “We have a new record out, called ‘Slam’ and this is the title track, ‘Impossible Things.’ Hilarious, I know.

Someone earlier asked about a fast version of Mr. Lincoln and you can also find that at around 27:45 on the video below. It looks like it was shot by the club and it’s not bad quality for a VHS transfer. Tomorrow: a day off as we drive to San Francisco.

Published by Steve, Denise, and Coco: Calculating Route

Welcome to our blog that we’re calling Calculating Route…, a reference to our GPS guide and the general randomness of our travels. Of course, we do have a route, at least through the end of 2023, but we’re trying to keep our options open in the search for a permanent, or semi-permanent, home here in Greater Europe. Off we go!
